Al-Midan neighborhood in the Dar Sa'ad neighborhood in Aden, the people of this neighborhood, children, women and the elderly are suffering daily from the rash of waste water, which becomes a nightmare disturbing their daily life. Getting rid of this suffering is the people's main dream. They are waiting a day in which they can wake up without bad smells, pools of sewage and a night of tranquility without chasing the insects.
The market places and roads of block#14 in Al-Basateen in Aden, in the Dar Sa’ad district, have turned into swamps of wastewater due to the overflow of cesspits. People here have no access to sanitation services because the area had been built in a disorganized fashion making it difficult to connect the homes to the networks. This is why they have resorted to digging cesspits for the wastewater which needs pumping from time to time. When they overflow, the cesspits swamp the streets of the neighborhood creating stagnant pools of wastewater.
A women resident of Ba-Yahia region of the governorate of Shabwah, Barakah Salim Yehia, 50 years old, is the head of the household. She has five children-two girls and two boys – who are all enrolled in preparatory and secondary schools. She lives off her only source of livelihood – working in the land she inherited from the children’s father. Hajja Barakah is well-experienced in livestock breeding, but she lacks the necessary fund to buy some goats and sheep for her project.
PWP has been making extensive efforts to promote a culture of occupational health and safety among workers, contractors, and implementers of activities funded by PWP.
The PWP has been making extensive efforts to promote implementation of occupational health and safety measures by contractors and workers during field implementation of sub-projects. To this end, the PWP has been using a carrot and stick policy to approach this. It has been issuing citations to contractors and, at times if they don’t comply, the PWP confiscates their bid bonds. At the same time, the PWP has been organizing training and awareness workshops for contractors and engineers from various governorates of the country to underscore the importance of implementation of occupational health and safety procedures. As part of a scheme of incentives, the PWP has been dispatching safety specialists to project sites to follow-up and prod contractors and workers to adhere to the occupational safety procedures.
The PWP devotes a great deal of attention to strengthening women participation and economic empowerment. This stems from a belief that this would have a profound impact on households and society as a whole. Women, as a group, have been most affected by the current conditions in the country - they also bear many responsibilities.
Many women have skills and creative talents that need to be polished and developed. However, harsh living conditions force most women to take up the responsibility of providing for the daily needs of their households - such as fetching water to their homes, as is the case with Qibool Saeed.
Suna’-Allah Nasser, one of the women of al-Nushaifah in the Governorate of Marib, had married early. She has been facing hard times and going through the bitterness of life, as life has not been good to her. Her husband left her with their less than one-year-old infant and later divorced her.
Located in the Jebel Dar area in al-Sabrah District of the Governorate of Ibb, al-Salam school has suffered neglect, the weathering of time and the onslaught of termites on its roof - which became a lurking danger threatening the lives of students.
