Cultivating Abandoned Land in Damashiqa, Marib.

Reclamation of Abandoned Land

Following the implementation of a project to reduce water loses under the Social Protection Project - ESPECRP, financed by the World Bank’s IDA in partnership with UNDP, PWP implemented a component that has led to increase irrigated areas.

In fact, the project led to doubling the irrigated area. According to Shawaq, many farmers were encouraged to reclaim their abandoned land and even expand them. They also started planting new organge and mango plants. Farmers also implemented the drip irrigation initiative making use of the help provided by the project with the aim of reducing depletion of the precious groundwater resource. The project didn’t only contribute to savings in the use of water, it also reduced the time and money - a matter that has contributed effectively to the improvement of living conditions, increased production, and reclamation of a sizable area of abandoned land.
