Last Friday, I was happy to accompany engineers of the Public Works Project (PWP) and the contractor for the Areed-al-Ghail Road Paving Project( (first stage). I wanted to see firsthand the progress and quality of work in this project.
We were overwhelmed by happiness as we listened to the beneficiaries talking about the concrete positive impact of this intervention on their lives. This project had remained a dream for many for over 15 years, but recently began to change their lives. It has become a giant leap that has alleviated the hardship of miserable living under very difficult economic conditions!
The PWP implements basic services projects (in education, roads, health...etc.). It has gained the trust of Arab and international financial institutions for the impressive results it has produced, even at the height of the war, and for the quality of sub-projects selection in priority areas. The Project, sometimes, targets certain areas that no one is lobbying for, or are so remote from the capital city, or lack volunteers from among its residents.
The PWP has won the confidence of Yemeni contractors for its simplified and transparent procedures and integrity of its distinguished staff, who are free from corruption and nepotism. And that what has made Yemeni contractor offer bids at half the prices they normally bid at other government agencies.
This Project is the only institution that has satisfied everyone - citizens and politicians alike - and has been evaluated as the best achievement of successive Yemeni governments.
Even while war is raging, PWP is coordinating with all sides and implements its development programs - without constraints or political exploitation. It works even in areas of conflict and is always welcomed as an important guest, always warmly welcomed.
Trust and good reputation that have been earned by the Project have been behind many prized achievement for Yemen - many of which cannot be bought at any price. We all must protect this relief outlet that has left indelible marks everywhere, and its works can be seen in every district and sub-district of the Republic, without exception.
If politics had divided us into different parties and groups, professionalism and impartiality of the Project have kept a point of convergence between all parties. This has made the Project an important relief outlet that has provided and still provides high quality services, especially at times of emergencies .
Much appreciation for all efforts of the Project. Many thanks to the funding institutions, of all sorts, and increased progress and innovations for the Project and its outstanding staff.
